Herbs and shrubs; leaves alternate, sometimes basal; flowers hypogynous, bisporangiate; perianth (or each of its whorls) regular; sepals 4-6 or more, often early deciduous; petals 6-9, separate, sometimes glandlike; except in Podophyllum, stamens as many as petals and opposite them and anthers opening by uplifted lids; ovary 1-Ioculed, placenta 1, parietal, or ovules basal; fruit a berry or capsule.
