Herbs; leaves opposite, whorled, alternate, or all basal, simple or rarely pinnately dissected; flowers hypogynous or rarely epigynous; calyx usually 5-lobed (4-7); corolla regular; petals usually 5 (4-7), more or less united at base; stamens as many as petals and opposite them; staminodes sometimes present; carpels 5, united; locule 1; placenta central, free. style 1; fruit a capsule.
