Tall erect herb; stem prickly; blades prickly on midvein beneath, basal ones oblanceolate, crenate. cauline ones lanceolate, entire, sessile or connate-perfoliate; flowers epigynous, perfect, in peduncled dense ovoid or cylindric clusters subtended by an involucre of rigid prickly bracts; rigid bractlets among the flowers longer than the flowers; calyx about 1 mm long, silky; corolla pale purple, not quite regular, tubular, with 4 short lobes; stamens 4, inserted on corolla; carpels 2, only 1 developing; locule and ovule 1; fruit an achene.
