Herbs; leaves opposite, simple, entire, without stipules; flowers hypogynous, bisporangiate; sepals 5, narrow, almost separate; corolla almost regular to 2-lipped; hypogynous disk present; stamens 2 or 4, on corolla tube; 1 or 3 staminodes sometimes present; carpels 2. united; style 1; ovary 2-loculed; seeds on curved projections from the axile placentae; capsule splitting elastically.
