Low herbs or twining vines; leaves often few, simple, petioled, blades entire; flowers epigynous, bisporangiate, solitary; sepals 3, united, tubular below, 1-3 lobed above; petals none or vestigial; stamens 6 or 12; carpels 6 (in ours), united; style short and thick; stigma-lobes as many as carpels; ovary 6-loculed; placentae central; ovules many fruit a capsule.
