Succulent herbs; leaves alternate or whorled. simple; flowers hypogynous, bisporangiate, zygomorphic; sepals 3, the lower one saccate, spurred at base; petals 5, the lateral ones united in pairs, each pair appearing as one lobed petal; stamens 5; carpels 5, united, style 1; ovary 5-Ioculed; capsule elastically dehiscent.
