Tree; leaves alternate, simple, blades entire; flowers monosporangiate or bisporangiate, hypogynous; generally imperfectly dioecious; carpellate flowers axillary, solitary; staminate flowers usually smaller, sometimes in small clusters; sepals 4, united at base: corolla urceolate to campanulate, 4-lobed, pale yellow; stamens usually 16 in staminate flowers, 8 staminodes in carpellate flowers; carpels united, locules 8; styles 4, each 2-lobed; ovules 1-2 in each locule: fruit a berry.
