Trees and shrubs with opposite palmately compound leaves; flowers hypogynous, in terminal panicles, bisporangiate and staminate ones usually in same panicle; sepals 5, united, sometimes oblique or gibbous at base; corolla zygomorpbic; petals 4 or 5, clawed; extrastaminal disk present; stamens 5-8, separate; carpels 3, united, ovary 3-loculed. 2 ovules in each locule; style and stigma 1; fruit a leathery capsule, seeds 1-3, smooth, brown, large.
