Perennial herb of marshes or shallow water; leaves alternate, simple, blades cordate-ovate; flowers hypogynous, bisporangiate, small, bracted, in peduncled nodding spikes; periantb none; stamens 6-8; filaments white; carpels 3-4, united only at base, indehiscent in fruit; styles short, curved outwardly.
